|Favorite Chicago Sounds is a collaborative web archive designed to showcase unique audio portraits of Chicago and mirror what Chicagoans think about their city’s soundscape. It is the Chicago manifestation of an international series of Favorite Sounds projects, started by British sound artist Peter Cusack. Chicago artist Jesse Seay collaborated with Cusack in 2006 to establish Favorite Chicago Sounds. Since then, FCS has developed partnership programs with numerous Chicago institutions, including Chicago Public Media, Experimental Sound Studio, and the Chicago Children’s Museum.
FCS Director Jesse Seay is an associate professor at Columbia College Chicago, with an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MA in Media & Cultural Studies from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her acoustic-kinetic sculpture has shown at the Hyde Park Art Center, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, the Chicago Children’s Museum, and is on permanent display at the University of Chicago. From 2007 to 2009, she was on-air as a host and producer for Chicago Public Media’s Vocalo.org. She joined Columbia College’s Department of Audio Arts & Acoustics in 2009, where she teaches sound art and analog electronics.
