it's really loud and sometimes can be an interruption to conversation, but it's momentary, and it makes me know that i'm in a large city (very few cities have such an extensive transit system) and the el is one of my favorite things about chicago

The tornado/curfew siren while watching the 10:00 news on a summer night.
Always felt good as a kid to make it home before the siren went off at 10:30. Reminds me of being young.
